Gravity – Movie

Gravity-2013-Movie-PosterI freak out about space stuff.  If there is any thing going on that has to do with space, chances are it will have a great deal of my attention.  However , when I first saw the trailer for this movie a few months back for some reason my skeptical brain clicked on and told me that it was probably going to be terrible.  I knew Hollywood would screw it up, and all of the inaccuracies that would surely be there would completely keep me and any other other space geek from enjoying the movie.

Let me be the first to tell you I was wrong, very very wrong.  No, not about their being inaccuracies – there were plenty as Neil DeGrasse Tyson let us know – I was wrong about not being able to enjoy the movie.  It was a complete roller-coaster joy ride the entire 91 minutes.

“Gravity” is the most unique cinematic experience I can remember.  I simply cannot remember another movie that was anything like this.  First, it captured the awe and wonder that I feel about space multiple times.  There were many moments were we were able to see the Earth like only an astronaut could, and there were times when you could look into the vast, lonely, emptiness which is also beautiful.

The tension was so tight throughout most of the movie that breathing became a voluntary action.  The only times that it let up was to try and pull the tears from your eyes with either beautiful shots or surprising character moments.

You must go see this movie while it is still in theaters, preferably in 3D

The Czech Republic Wants the Candy Meth too!

(This Article contains very minor Breaking Bad Spoilers from Season 4/5)

Over on my YouTube channel I created a quick little video showing how to make cheap, quick, and easy Costume Meth for all my little Heisenburg’s out there.  I was checking out a few of the stats to help optimize my promotion and I decided to see what country is “Liking” my video the most.

BreakingBadCandyMethLikes

As you can see, the Czech Republic is right behind the US in liking my video.  Normally, I wouldn’t think much of this…Except, in Breaking Bad the Czech Republic is a major meth buyer for Walt and I’ve read that meth production is centered there.  It’s probably just a fluke right? Maybe the questionable traffic source in the picture below is a coincidence…

The Nerdist Podcast

The Nerdist Podcast
The Nerdist Podcast

Chris Hardwick serves up more than just nerd with his friends and co-hosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira.  The Nerdist podcast primarily consists of comedy and interviews with awesome people.  First off these aren’t like any other interviews out there.  They’re so sincere, relaxed and hilarious you’d think you were listening to old friends sitting on a couch making new friends with cool people.

The Nerdist podcast is enlightening and funny – Who would have thought I would learn so much useless knowledge from one place.

Chris Hardwick – Known for his stand-up, work on Singled Out and Web Soup, to name a couple, and is currently the host of Talking Dead and Talking Bad as well as the voice of Craig on Sanjay and Craig.  Who doesn’t Chris know?  Seriously it’s limitless.  I can’t say I know Chris personally but after watching and listening to him for a while I feel like I can make an honest assessment and say he is genuinely a nice guy, he works his tail off and cares about what he puts out.  The guy is friends with Neil Patrick Harris,  what else do you need to know beyond that?

Dead City

[rating=4]

Dead City written by Joe McKinney This story follows a San Antonio police officer during the night of the initial outbreak as he battles his way through the dead to get back to his wife and infant son. Joe McKinney sucks you in with action but where I think he excels the most is when talks about his fears involving his family especially when he talks about his infant son. Starting out I admit I was kinda bored because the zombie’s seemed to be stereotypical old school zombies.  That’s not really a problem with the book or at all, I think I was wanting something different at the time.  I am glad I kept reading because the pace of the book changed and kept me turning pages.  Between the action sequences, near misses with death I couldn’t ask for much more.  One thing that I love doing is theorizing about how zombies could happen and how they could be dealt with, so when that aspect was thrown into the dialog I was hooked. My one solid complaint is that at the end
once the danger was dealt with there are no survival details delivered, just bam back to normal after a flash forward
.

A buddy let me borrow his copy but you can find Dead City on Amazon

Day by Day Armageddon

[rating=5]

Day by Day Armageddon written by J.L. Bourne and narrated by Jay Snyder.

Told from the perspective of a journal that belongs to a Naval officer that is living in San Antonio Texas and is his account of the initial outbreak and violence that spreads.  Listening to the accounts makes you feel as if you are there feeling what he feels as he describes the decisions he has to make in order to insure his survival and the survival of his group.

Once you start listening to this audio book you won’t be able to stop.  I’m serious, I started last night and finished this afternoon.  Mick and a mutual friend turned me on to this series and I can’t be more pleased.

Excerpt from the book on J.L. Bourne’s website  I’m sorry to report that despite our best efforts, the anomaly has broken the boundary of government containment measures.  It is no longer safe to inhabit larger cities.  Safe zones are being established on the outskirts of high population centers and will be open to those not infected.

I got my copy from Audible.com or Amazon, same thing, and listened to it on my android.
