The Martian – Book

This book was too good to have anything less than 10 stars on our 5 star scale. I have listened to this book 3 times and will listen again. -mrb

Written by Andy Weir a writer and software engineer. The Martian is a story about astronaut Mark Watney, who was thought to be dead, stranded on the uninhabitable planet mars with little supplies and no support, his only hope of survival is science. This book has the perfect amount of science, humor and near misses to keep you at the edge of your seat.

- Andy Weir originally wrote The Martian for free on his website in serialized releases. It wasn’t until people requested that he put The Martian on Amazon so that they could read the book in Kindle format.
- Andy Weir worked for Blizzard where he contributed to World of Warcraft 2.

Interstellar – Movie

Why did it take us so long to post about Interstellar? Yesh!

This movie was incredible. Science was spot on and Artistic representations were as good as it gets when trying to conceptualize concepts that are only theory in humanity’s grasp. Interstellar covers Black holes, Wormholes, String Theory, Multi-Dimensional existence, Time Dilation and much more. We loved this movie!

Interstellar was directed by Christopher Nolan and the script was written by his brother Jonathan Nolan. The cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine as well as a slew of other well known actors to include Matt Damon.

Facts
- Jonathan Nolan studied relativity at the California Institute of Technology while writing the script to gain scientific insights
- Science adviser was Kip Thorne, a well known theoretical physicist
- The story behind Interstellar was dreamed up by film producer Lynda Obst and Science Advisor and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne.
- Lynda Obst & Kip Thorne collaborated on the 1997 film Contact based on the story created by Carl Sagan.
- Back in the day Carl Sagan set up Lynda Obst & Kip Thorne on a blind date.

Code Contest on Instructables

Instructables with sponsorship by Microsoft is holding a contest for the best Instructables that are code related. The contest is called Coding Creations and among many prizes is a surface pro 3 and a Spark Prototyping Bundle. The judges prize is for the “best use of Visual Studio, Microsoft Azure, Kinect/Xbox, Windows Phone apps, or any Windows app” so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

So far I have submitted 2 Instructables for this competition, A View-State Key Generator (in c# & php) and a simple app that does Image Edge Detection.

Trip to a Mini Maker Faire

So it was pretty awesome for their to be a local Maker anything in Central Arkansas. I can’t wait to see if we get a Maker Space so I can spend countless hours there making gadgets. This Mini Maker Faire was put on by the Arkansas Innovation Hub on Saturday May 2nd which until this event I wasn’t familiar with. I did a terrible job at taking photos and I guess was too busy geeking out. This event had everything from robotics and laser powered projectors to forges and gas powered bicycles.

Day 84

Can’t believe its been 84 days. I need to be taking more photos. Just a note that I’ve only spent about $40 in feed.

These little raptors are getting bigger. Just to think these guys ancestors were most likely dinosaurs.

Day 37

Mounted the poles to the top of the kennel last night so that I could hang the rabbit cages. I used U-bolts to attach the cages to the poles and I used 2 poles so that the cages would remain stationary.
